Blocked Drains Lansvale

Lansvale is a small, river-bounded pocket of Fairfield whose name blends neighbouring Lansdowne and Canley Vale, with a strongly Vietnamese-Australian community and the Georges River running along its edge.

The suburb was largely built out from the 1950s as a post-war detached-house area. The 2021 census records 94.7 per cent separate houses, a mix of original brick-veneer and fibro cottages sitting alongside later full-brick rebuilds.

Mirambeena Regional Park and the old Chipping Norton Lake grounds line the riverside edge, a legacy of the sand quarries that were later reclaimed into parkland.

The historic Lansdowne Bridge, a sandstone arch built in 1836, still carries traffic over the creek at the suburb's edge, and Oak Point Golf Club now sits on the river flats once home to the old Dizzyland and Magic Kingdom amusement parks.

That floodplain setting is the real story underground. The land sits low, only around 10 metres in places, so the water table stays high and keeps constant pressure on buried pipe joints.

Heavy rain adds to that load fast. Streets off Hollywood Drive and Henry Lawson Drive have seen the Georges River break its banks in major floods as recently as February 2020 and again in 2022, and stormwater pits here surcharge well before the river itself peaks.

A high water table and an overloaded stormwater system are two sides of one problem, groundwater pushing in from below while surface water backs up from above. Blocked stormwater is built for both, and a CCTV drain inspection settles which of the two is actually to blame before a cent is quoted.

Two other faults come up often enough on our call-outs here to name.

Caught early, either fault clears in a single visit. A wet season is when both catch up with a household at once, and clearing the symptom without finding the cause only buys a few weeks.

Families near Lansvale East Public School and the smaller streets off Huntingdale Avenue tend to report the tree-root version first, usually a bathroom that drains a little slower every week until it stops altogether.

Our home turf keeps us close, and a plumber reaching this stretch of the Georges River is never a long trip.
